Galaxy Express 999 is the best. The movie is super good, but if you can get past the super clunky 70’s Japanese cartoon animation of the original show, you should watch that as well. Unlike the movie, which only goes to a few planets, the show visits a hundred planets, give or take, and SPOILER, they’re all horrible places where most of the people have mean, ugly hearts. The few that aren’t horrible inside are dying of a disease, or they worked their young lives away, or they meet their end when Tetsuro kills them in a duel to the death, where they never intend to kill Tetsuro because they knew he was good.Even for a show about a child learning about becoming an adult, there are an awful lot of life lessons. It’s not stuff like “Everything doesn’t go your way!”, it’s stuff like, “Sometimes you’re going to see some people starving to death and you’re going to have to get over not being able to feed them.” It’s harsh!
The show starts out with Tetsuro swearing he’ll get a machine body so he can live forever, but throughout every single episode, we learn that a machine body is perhaps not worth the price! I’m sure this is some allegory for growing up and that we’re supposed to learn that we lose more than we gain if we give ourselves to the machine. I don’t know if that’s the lesson here, but that’s what i’m learning.
Tetsuro is also a heck of a lot uglier in the tv series. I like him better as a troll than as a boy who looks like he’ll grow up into Captain Harlock. You get more of the sense that he’s REALLY got it bad. I didn’t quite capture how ugly he is here.
